Oldies Love Songs

Depending on who you are, "oldies love songs" has a lot of different meanings. I'm listing old love songs that were either before Rock & Roll and Country & Western became key pop music genres, or love tunes by artists who wouldn't be classified in those genres, and sang music that was popular before American popular music took a different turn in the middle of the 20th century.

In our oldies love songs, there are plenty of crooners and big bands, along with a few jazz singers. I tried to capture the spirit of the times, but not having lived in those times, I'm getting the news secondhand. Let it be said that some of the greatest music ever made came from the 1930s to 1950s, and that goes double some great bittersweet love songs of that era.

World War II Oldies Love Songs

Imagine the kind of love songs that come from WWII, when families and lovers are separated by thousands of miles, mired in a total war that no one has any idea how long it will last. Then imagine a war where 16 million some-odd Americans are in uniform, and hundreds of thousands of American boys are fated to die. Then imagine the kind of bittersweet love tunes that get written in that environment.

Nothing today matches the longing and sentimentality of some of these amazing love songs of the early 1940s. Life was a different story back then, for a generation coming out of the Great Depression to face down Hitler and his cronies. At first, you're drawn to the seeming happiness and joy, even the zest for life, that's found in so many of these songs. Then you notice the deep melancholy that envelops some of these great love songs of the war era.

Oldie Love Songs

Oldies Love SongsThese oldies love songs come from several decades, so it's hardly fair to lump them all into one category. One thing all of these romantic melodies have in common are that they are catchy, and most of them have been covered by dozens of different artists. Musicians love to cover great songs, so songs like these are likely to never die. Still, I've listed some of the most memorable versions of each song.

  • That's Amore - Dean Martin
  • The Way You Look Tonight - Tony Bennett
  • When I Fall in Love - Nat King Cole

Frank Sinatra Love Songs - Oldies Love Song Hits

Then you have "Old Blue Eyes". Frank Sinatra was his own institution. Watch a sentimental romantic comedy and you have a pretty good chance of hearing a Frank Sinatra tune in there somewhere, and there's a fair chance it's going to be a song about romance. When you start listing great songs by Sinatra, you eventually have to just cut off the list. You just never run out of good material.

Old Love Songs

For those who are new to oldies love songs, this is just a small sample of all the great love songs that were produced a couple of generations ago. There's a class and style to the old romantic music of the first half of the 20th century, that doesn't always exist in the mass-marketed, overproduced pop hits of today.
